India beat New Zealand comprehensively by 197 runs in 1st Test Match against New Zealand at Kanpur.
I always wonder if India can win any test match without R Ashwin. If one digs into history, it will clearly reveal major contributions from this off spinner. I am therefore, convinced beyond doubt that sans him, winning a test match is something next to impossible.
Kiwis were already on a slide on Day 3 when they lost overnight batsmen cheaply during pre lunch session.
- NZ- 262 and 236.
- IND- 318 and 377/5 decl.
Top order failed. R Taylor-0 and 17, M Guptil- 21 and 0. Even BJ Watling 21 and 15 performed below par. He was not convincing enough in the warm up match as well. K Williamson looked under confident in second innings. Overall, it was a big let down by batsmen against some excellent spin bowling by R Ashwin and R Jadeja. Surprisingly, the tail enders looked like novices batting against spinners.
Except M Santner and I Sodhi, no other bowler showed promise. T Boult did bowl well in first innings but was below his best in second innings. M Craig and N Wagner were an apology. Both should exit from the team.
Recommended Players for 2nd Test
H Nichols, J Neesham, D Bracewell and T Southee be included in team.
T Lotham, BJ Watling, N Wagner and T Boult should sit on the bench.
Top and middle order delivered. V Kohli failed. He has hit a low patch and may continue to score low in this series. Surprisingly, there were no centuries to be seen. Indian batsmen appeared subdued for some unknown reasons. Lusty hittings and quick scoring was not noticeable.
R Ashwin and R Jadeja did not allow Kiwis to score by picking up wickets regularly. M Shami did some tricks with the ball in second innings. U Yadav was a waste. W Saha is misfit as a wicket keeper.
Recommendations for 2nd Test Match
KL Rahul, W Saha. U Yadav and M Shami be rested.
S Dhawan, B Kumar, I Sharma be included in team. KL Rahul can replace W Saha as a wicket keeper.
Both teams would have learnt their lessons well. NZ would have to do some serius thinking about their strategies for the second test starting in Kolkata on 30 Sep.
I have a feeling that the Black caps will bounce back in second test and defeat India . Can that happen? Just wait and watch.
Till then, keep reading my posts. A fresh post on Predictions about 2nd test will be out soon.
