The last day of Destination North East 2016 was a Cultural Bonanza for all those who visited Pragati Maidan to learn about cultures of Eight States of beautiful North East Region through Folk Music and Contemporary dances. In simple words, every visitor was handed over a bouquet of various cultures of each state. Here is a run down of events of the day.
There were Eleven Entries for this competition which was for Western Pop and Classical songs. It was heartening to see young singers showing their talent on stage in front of enthusiastic fans. It was evident from the performances that there is a growing trend among children to learn classical singing. Few English numbers/rap were very pleasant to the ears.
There were Fifty Entries for this competition and judges had a tough time shortlisting only top four performers who would enthrall crowd later in the evening. It was pure entertainment on a sunny day. The zest and spirit of participants knew no bounds.
All of them showed true grit and interest in what they put up for the spectators who were more than willing to clap and boost morale of all performers.
RIDA And The Musical Folks
This is a Famous Band from Meghalaya headed by RIDA , the lead singer. The beauty about her songs is that she first sings in Khasi and then subsequently translates it into English. Moreover, All the musical instruments used by band are made out of locally available cane.
Some of the instruments used by band are- Symphong (wooden panel), Duitara (guitar like string instrument), Bom (drum) and Ksing. Rida was very impressive with her voice fluctuations in a smooth manner.
Formed in 2012, this Nagaland Band sings Folk Fusion- Naga traditional as well as folk songs. They fuse traditional ethnic music with Rock, Reggae and Jazz from the west. The use of Violin is quite pronounced in few songs. The female lead singer carried the audiences with her very well.
Hindi number “ROKO” which appeals for stopping all hatred, fights and quarrels with each other was applauded a lot.
This was choreographed by Nationally Acclaimed Guru Madhurima of Assam who is an expert dancer of Bihu and Satriya. Nine different dance forms were amalgamated into one act which simply mesmerized everyone. The coordination was perfect and the dancing effort was praiseworthy.
A very successful three day Destination North East 2016 was formally closed in a glittering ceremony.
A fashion show was staged by Charlie- Famous Designer of Mizoram. Good looking models displayed light colored ethnic style dresses– the similar kind worn by women of Mizoram.
This was a classical and Contemporary Dance Choreography which acted like an icing on the cake. No one could have asked for anything better on the final day of the event. The richness of folk music of entire North east region was evident in this beautifully choreographed act.
Top Four Performers out of auditions held in the morning, once again performed exceedingly well on a well lit stage and jam packed amphitheater. Every act drew cheer and clapping form a supportive audiences.
Overall, the function was a great success and everyone left contented and happy.
